A room built for being contradicted. It is not open yet, and this is exactly what it will be.
Every other part of this site hands you something finished — an explanation, a method, a grade on a piece of evidence. This room is the opposite. It is where the unfinished things are worked out in front of everyone, including the parts we have got wrong.
It is the part Fred expects to be the most interesting, most productive and most difficult thing here, and it is the part we are least willing to fake.
Three things that have nowhere to happen at the moment.
Questions get asked and answered where everyone can see. Not a help desk. If you ask something, the answer is published, because the next person with your question should not have to ask it again. Over time the room becomes the record of what people actually needed to know — which is a far better guide to what to write next than any of our guesses.
Claims get argued with. Every claim on this site carries a grade for how good the evidence behind it is. A grade is a judgement, and judgements should be contestable in public by anyone who thinks we read the evidence wrong. If you change our mind, the grade changes and the record shows that you changed it.
Work in progress is visible while it is still ugly. Most publishing waits until a thing looks certain and shows you only that. This room does the opposite, because the uncertain middle is where the method actually lives, and hiding it is how the whole business came to look like something only clever people can do.
Every comment gets a reply from a person. Not a form letter, and not eventually. This is the rule the room stands or falls on. A comment box nobody answers teaches the one reader who was paying close enough attention to notice a problem that their attention is worth nothing here — and they take it somewhere else, permanently.
Nothing gets curated for content. Order and civility, yes. A question that is badly phrased, factually confused or inconvenient stays exactly as it was written, because tidying it destroys the thing that made it worth having.
You choose how visible you are, and you can change it later. Anonymous by default. Reachable if you want an answer to you personally. Named if you want the credit — and some people will, because being the person who found it is the point for them.
The server goes up shortly. Until then, writing to us from any page is the honest, smaller version of this room: it reaches us, it is plain about what becomes of what you wrote, and it does not pretend to be a conversation.
