Am I smart enough for this?

Yes. And that is not encouragement — it is the finding.

People ask this in different words. Do you have to be smart to use AI. Am I too old to learn this. I only finished high school. I am not a scientist. The question underneath is the same one, and it is the reason most people never start.

The honest answer is that the thing you are worried you lack is mostly not what does the work.

What actually happened when we watched closely

Fred sat in Richard Feynman’s living room, and in Linus Pauling’s, in the 1960s. What struck him was not how far above ordinary they were. It was that they were brilliant and ordinary at the same time — asking plain questions out loud, being wrong in front of people, circling a thing until it gave.

That is not a story about how they were secretly just like us. They were not. Say it plainly: they reached further than almost anyone, and the shoulders most of us stand on are theirs. Nothing here makes them smaller. Anyone who tells you the greats were nothing special has taken something true and turned it into a cheap sneer, and the sneer costs more than it looks like it does — it teaches the next person that reaching furthest just makes you tomorrow’s punchline.

The finding is narrower and more useful than that. Most of what looked like genius from the outside was method. Ask the plain question. Say the thing you do not understand out loud. Refuse to move on from the part that does not fit. Follow the odd result instead of tidying it away. Those are habits, not gifts, and habits can be picked up.

Why it looked like a gift

Because the method is invisible and the result is not. You see the answer, not the eleven months of circling. You see the paper, not the wrong turns. What gets published is a clean line drawn afterwards through a mess, and nobody publishes the mess.

So the method looks like something the person was, rather than something they did — and if it is something they were, then it is not available to you. That conclusion is the illusion. It is also the single most expensive belief in this whole business, because of who it stops.

Who it stops, and what that costs

It stops the person who noticed something. The caregiver who saw the pattern because they were there every day for four years. The patient who knows their own body reacted differently and was told it was nothing. The retired machinist who recognised a failure mode from a completely different industry.

Every one of them had a real observation and concluded they were not qualified to have it. The observation did not go anywhere else. It just stopped.

Anne’s diagnosis took years and several tier-one medical centres. What eventually moved it was a retired chemical engineer — not a physician — who kept asking why the numbers did what they did and would not accept an answer that did not fit them. That is not a story about a special person. It is a story about what refusing to drop the question is worth.

What “together” means here

The sentence on our front page is alone we are ignored, together, we make a difference. It is easy to read that as bring your strength to the group. That is not what it means.

It means you do not have to already be strong. Together is what makes falling safe and learning possible. It is a carpet, not a crutch — it is not there to hold you up, it is there so that trying something and getting it wrong does not hurt enough to stop you trying again.
